Mercedes? original Gelandenwagens, better known today as G-Wagens, were built by Mercedes? subsidiary Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Steyr, Austria.
They were originally designed for the military, but also found such great acceptance in other applications that they were sold worldwide through the 1980's in almost all but the US market.
They were built as two and four door wagons, pickups, and open cabriolets.
The Mercedes build quality of the early cars is simply incredible and G-Wagens continued to be built in the Austrian plant until the 2011 model year.
The early models are becoming collectible in the same way that Land Rover's Defender and Toyota's FJ have become, yet they continue to offer an unmatched combination of utility, durability, safety, road presence and style.
